• Uwinka Group: A larger group with over 40 individuals. Tracking here involves more challenging terrain, but the rewards are immense as you encounter these dynamic primates.
• Cyamudongo Group: Smaller and more habituated, this group provides an accessible yet equally captivating tracking experience. Reaching Cyamudongo requires a 4×4 safari vehicle due to rugged roads, but the journey is an adventure in itself.

How to Get to Nyungwe Forest National Park

By Road: Traveling by road is the most popular option for visitors heading to Nyungwe Forest National Park. Starting from Kigali, the journey offers scenic views of Rwanda’s iconic rolling hills, local villages, and notable landmarks like the Nyanza King’s Palace and Gikongoro Genocide Memorial. The drive takes about 4-6 hours, with routes passing through towns such as Huye and Nyamagabe, near the park’s entrance.

Public transport options include buses departing from Nyabugogo Bus Terminal in Kigali to Rusizi, with stops near the park. Companies like Ritco Express, Alpha Express, and Omega Express offer reliable services.

By Air: For a quicker and more luxurious option, chartered flights from Kigali to Kamembe National Airport are available through RwandAir and Akagera Aviation. From Kamembe, it’s a short drive to the park, with options for helicopter pickups to specific lodges.

By Water: Combine your journey with a scenic boat ride on Lake Kivu from Rubavu or Karongi to Kamembe. This thrilling option lets you explore Lake Kivu’s serene waters and vibrant islands before heading to Nyungwe.

Best Time for Chimpanzee Tracking

The prime season for chimpanzee tracking in Nyungwe runs from June to August, when fig trees are abundant, attracting chimpanzees for easier viewing. Morning treks, starting as early as 4:30 AM, offer the best chance of encounters as the chimps are most active during these hours. To ensure minimal disruption to the primates, only two groups of visitors are permitted per day, with a maximum viewing time of one hour.
