This 6 Day Congo Lowland Gorilla Trek & Chimpanzee Safari will commence and conclude in Rwanda. You will begin by visiting Nyungwe National Park for a thrilling canopy walk, followed by a visit to Kahuzi Biega National Park in Bukavu, DRC, for the gorilla trek and Lwiro Chimpanzee Sanctuary. Moreover, you will explore Tchegera Island in Goma. Finally, you will boldly cross the DRC-Rwanda border to Rubavu and be confidently transferred to Kigali.

Lowland Silverback Gorilla in the Republic of Congo

Day1: Transfer from Kigali International Airport to Hotel and City Tour

On Day 1, you will arrive at Kigali International Airport and meet our driver guide, who will transfer you to your hotel after briefing you about the upcoming activities. If you arrive in the morning, we will take you on a short tour of Kigali city and visit the Kigali Genocide Memorial to learn about Rwanda’s bloodiest genocide and how it was stopped.

Day 2: Transfer to Nyungwe National Park for a Canopy Walk and Transfer to the Rwanda-Congo border

On Day 2, after an early breakfast, you will drive for about 5 hours to Nyungwe National Park. After arriving, you will have lunch and experience the canopy walk around 2 pm. In the evening, you will cross the Rwanda-DRC border and stay at the Orchids Safari Club, where you will proceed with the Bukavu city tour.

Day 3: Gorilla Trekking Experience in Kahuzi Biega National Park

On Day 3, you will go trekking with gorillas in Kahuzi Biega National Park after breakfast. The trek usually takes 1 to 2.5 hours each way, depending on the location of the gorilla group and the difficulty of the terrain. After spending an hour with the gorilla family group, you will return to your hotel. After lunch, you will proceed with the Bukavu city tour.

Day 4: Chimpanzee Trekking at Lwiro Primates Rehabilitation Center

On Day 4, after breakfast, we will visit the Lwiro Primates Rehabilitation Center, which takes care of 83 chimpanzees, 105 monkeys, and 12 other species. The sanctuary has been recognized as a World Heritage Site since 1997 and gives orphaned chimpanzees a second chance at life while also ensuring their protection in the wild. You will not only visit them but also participate in the conservation activities in the sanctuary. This activity will take a whole day, after which you will transfer to your hotel.

Day 5: Community Visit and Engagement through Gomaand Transfer to Tchegera Island

On Day 5, after breakfast, you will transfer to Goma by rapid boat at around 7:30 am, which normally takes 2 hours. On arrival, you will check in at the Ihusi Hotel and have lunch. You will then meet the local community and try to ride the made-in-Goma wooden bike famously known as the “tchukudu”. After the experience in the village, you will get transferred to Tchegera Island and stay in the midrange camp.

Day 6: Transfer to Kigali City, Rwanda

On Day 6, after breakfast at Tchegera and taking photos for beautiful memories, you will get transferred to Goma and cross the DRC-Rwanda border. You will drive for about 2 hours toward the northern province, the home of the gorillas. En route, you will experience a canoeing activity on the Mukungwa River, which is near the volcanoes. You then continue on your way to Kigali to fly back home.
