Aberdare National Park Activities, Photos, and Park Fees for 2024|2025

The closest town, Nyeri, is located 9 miles from Aberdare National Park, which is situated in the central Rift Valley of Kenya, around 95 miles from Nairobi. The area of Aberdare National Park is roughly 296 square miles.
It was created in 1884 to guard the Aberdare Mountain Range, which was established by Scottish adventurer Joseph Thomson. Named for Lord Aberdare, the Aberdare National Park was formally created in 1950. Queen Elizabeth II, who learned of her father’s passing in 1952 while visiting the reserve, is its most well-known guest.

Frequently Seen Wildlife
In Aberdare National Park, over 290 different kinds of birds have been identified, along with sporadic sightings of the uncommon giant forest hog and the distinctive bongo. Since the park is home to the Big Five, tourists may expect to see their favourite animals, such as lions, buffalo, and elephants. On a safari across the park, visitors can also observe plains animals like giraffes, bushbucks, and the adorable blue duiker.
Terrain
The Aberdare mountain range, which is a portion of the Great Rift Valley, makes up the landscape of Aberdare National Park. Its western side features high cliffs, while its eastern side has gently sloping slopes. Beautiful moorlands, valleys filled with trees, and waterfalls characterize Aberdare National Park’s landscape.

Witness the breathtaking Aberdare ranges, which span Nyeri and Nyandarua counties, as they rise and fall, offering a sight to behold. These ranges are alluring and dreamlike. The large park is filled with open moorlands and dense woodlands, and the deep, clear, crisp air makes it the ideal place to escape life and find calm, relaxation, and solitude. One of the joys of visiting this wonderland is the breathtaking panorama of the mountains.

The park is well known for its thunderous waterfalls that cascade into spray-filled ravines from cloud-covered heights.

The stunning Gura waterfalls roar from the other side of the same gorge; the sheer drop of the Chania waterfalls; the enthralling Magura waterfalls, which cascade across the vast mouth of the Queen’s Cave; and the magnificent Karuru waterfalls, whose ice-cold, crystal-clear waters drop an impressive 300 meters.

Other stunning and unusual sights are the dragon teeth, a volcanic rock structure that resembles a set of jagged teeth resting on a mouth. They are situated south of the equator in the park’s northern moorlands region.

A captivating sight amid the misty yet breathtaking moorlands is the twin peaks and towers.

The rocks next to each other are outcrops created by volcanic activity. Black rhinos, black servals, black leopards (rarely seen), and eastern bongos, large woodland antelopes, are rare wildlife species. Elephants, buffalos, giraffes, blue and colobus monkeys, warthogs, giant forest hogs, leopards, lions, suni, reedbucks, and elands are also found there. The breathtaking panorama features steep terrain blanketed in dense, misty tropical forests above the tree line.

The rare and elusive woodland antelope has a favourite hiding place: a belt of bamboo flora. At 10,000 feet, the moorlands, evocative of the European highlands, blend perfectly with the bamboo forest. The main reason the Aberdares are well-known is because of the Treetops Lodge, where Princess Elizabeth learned she would become queen when her father passed away. Since then, travellers visiting Kenya on safari have become a regular feature of the game lodge. Activities available to tourists include hiking, bird watching, camping, sport fishing, game viewing, and picnicking.
