The Machame Route is available in two versions: a 6-day or a 7-day trek. The 7-day itinerary offers better acclimatization opportunities and significantly increases summit success rates. This route provides stunning panoramic views and allows trekkers to traverse Kilimanjaro’s five distinct climate zones. Notably, you will experience the thrill of scaling the famous Barranco Wall and encounter the unique Dendrosenecio Kilimanjari, a plant species found nowhere else in the world.

Detailed Itinerary: Machame Route Kilimanjaro Climbing

Day 1: Arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport

Upon your arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), you will be warmly greeted by a Mtembezi African Safaris and Vacations representative who will arrange your transfer to a nearby hotel. Here, you will find everything needed for a comfortable stay: cozy accommodations, hot water, friendly staff, a swimming pool, and reliable internet access. In the evening, a briefing session will be conducted by our team to ensure you are well-prepared for the adventure ahead.

Day 2: Trek from Machame Gate to Machame Camp

Your adventure begins with a briefing at the hotel, followed by a drive to Kilimanjaro National Park’s entrance at Machame Gate. The trek officially starts after completing formalities, including obtaining permits and registering with search and Rescue. The trail winds through lush rainforests, where tropical showers are frequent. It’s recommended to carry extra clothing and a raincoat to stay dry.

Altitude Tips:

  • It’s your first day at a high altitude, so staying hydrated is crucial by drinking at least 4 litres of water daily.
  • Consider taking high-altitude medication to alleviate potential altitude sickness symptoms. Our guides will provide detailed recommendations. Consult with your doctor before departure to ensure you’re medically prepared.

Acclimatisation may cause discomfort at night, such as headaches or nausea. It’s essential to monitor your condition and notify your guide if you feel any signs of altitude sickness.

Day 3: Trek from Machame Camp to Shira Camp

After a nourishing breakfast, you’ll set off toward Shira Camp, passing through the rainforest and into the alpine moorland. This leg offers breathtaking views of the Shira Plateau. Though the trek is not technically demanding, the change in altitude may be noticeable, so pacing is key. Once you arrive at Shira Camp, you will enjoy lunch and have a rest before embarking on an acclimatization hike toward Lava Tower Camp, which rises 400 meters higher.

Acclimatization Hike: This easy hike helps improve your body’s ability to adjust to higher altitudes, ultimately increasing your chances of a successful summit.

Day 4: Trek from Shira Camp to Lava Tower and Descent to Barranco Camp

The day begins with a trek to Lava Tower at 4,600 meters. This part of the route involves several ascents and descents, making it one of the more challenging stretches. Spending 1-2 hours at this altitude helps acclimatize your body. Lunch will be served at Lava Tower before descending to Barranco Camp, where you’ll witness the awe-inspiring Barranco Wall. Though it may appear intimidating, the trail up the wall is manageable for trekkers of all levels.

Day 5: Trek from Barranco Camp to Barafu Camp

After an early breakfast, the day begins with the ascent of Barranco Wall. To avoid congestion from other groups, it’s advisable to start early. The climb takes about an hour and offers spectacular views of the surrounding landscape, including the Kibo volcano. Following the climb, the trail involves several ascents and descents on the way to Karanga Camp, where a warm lunch awaits. Later, you’ll continue to Barafu Camp to rest and prepare for the night summit.

Day 6: Summit to Uhuru Peak and Descent to Millennium Camp

The final push to Uhuru Peak starts at night. Though the route is not technically difficult, the high altitude makes the ascent physically demanding. Each climber will be accompanied by a guide for personalized support. After reaching Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa, you will have the option to visit a nearby glacier before descending back to Barafu Camp for a short rest. The journey continues to Millennium Camp.

Important: Pay attention during the descent as most accidents occur on the way down, particularly due to fatigue and slipping hazards.

Machame Route Kilimanjaro Climbing

Day 7: Descent from Millennium Camp to Mweka Gate

The final descent to Mweka Gate takes you through the tropical rainforest. After a celebratory breakfast, you’ll reflect on the incredible accomplishment of reaching the summit. At the park’s exit, you’ll have the opportunity to share your experience in the guestbook before being presented with your certificate of achievement. Transfers back to the hotel will be arranged for a well-deserved rest.

Day 8: Departure Day – Kilimanjaro International Airport

After resting at the hotel, you will be transferred to the airport for your departure.
