Affordable Rwanda Safari Activities

Rwanda’s nickname, the Land of a Thousand Hills, is well-deserved, as the country is known for its stunning and varied landscapes of rolling hills, mountains, and valleys. In addition to Volcanoes National Park, Nyungwe Forest is another important natural area in Rwanda, where visitors can see various primates, including chimpanzees, colobus monkeys, and mangabeys.

Rwanda’s location in Central Africa also makes it a hub of biodiversity, with a wealth of different animal and plant species found throughout the country. The smouldering volcanoes and historic rainforests add to the sense of adventure and wonder that travellers can experience in this beautiful country.

Overall, Rwanda offers a unique and immersive experience for those interested in exploring the natural world and its diverse inhabitants. From gorilla trekking to birdwatching to simply taking in the stunning scenery, this fascinating destination has no shortage of things to see and do.

Are you a traveller? Rwanda is the next stop to discover its famous locations.

Rwanda gives visitors some of the best global primate tracking, set against the backdrop of its endless green hills and soaring slopes. Rwanda is nestled between the well-known safari locations of Kenya and Tanzania.

It’s not surprising that the bulk of visitors come to Rwanda to track and watch our critically endangered cousins because the country is home to more than half of the world’s remaining mountain gorilla population. The fun-loving Sykes monkey, the Golden monkey, and the rowdy chimpanzee in the Nyungwe Forest are just a few of the primates that thrive in Rwanda.

With its tragic past, Rwanda is a hospitable and secure place to visit, a monument to its people’s tenacity. Rwanda provides a unique opportunity for travellers looking for a profoundly enlightening safari that is hard to discover elsewhere.

Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda sounds like an incredible destination for nature lovers and adventure seekers! The park’s impressive landscape, which features five of the Virunga volcanoes, is truly breathtaking. And of course, the opportunity to see the gentle mountain gorillas up close is a once-in-a-lifetime experience that many travelers dream of.

It’s also fascinating to learn about the other primates that can be found in the area, such as chimpanzees and various monkey species. With historic rainforests and diverse vegetation, there is no shortage of natural beauty to explore.

Gorilla trekking and volcano hikes are certainly two of the park’s most popular activities, but I imagine there are many other ways to immerse oneself in the natural wonders of the region. Whether it’s wildlife viewing, birdwatching, or simply taking in stunning views, Volcanoes National Park sounds like a must-visit destination for anyone interested in the natural world.

What’s the best travel period?

If you’re planning a trip to Rwanda to see the wildlife, keep in mind the best time to go on a safari;

  • The dry season runs from June to September.

Best for gorilla trekking, as the forest trails are less slick, and the weather is generally more pleasant. It’s also easier to spot animals in Akagera National Park due to the thinner vegetation. Even during the high season, the parks don’t feel overcrowded, and there is more sunshine to enjoy.

However, it’s important to note that gorilla permits need to be booked well in advance. While the scenery is typically more beautiful during the wet season, which runs from October to May, forest trails become slippery and challenging.

  • The wet season runs from October to May.

Despite the challenging conditions, gorilla trekking departures still leave as scheduled, even in heavy rain. Additionally, the wet season has its perks, such as green landscapes and clear skies. There may also be possible low-season discounts available.

Don’t forget to capture some amazing wildlife photos during your trip!

Rwanda Parks

Rwanda was unlikely to become a popular destination for wildlife watching, but now it is considered one of the most attractive locations in Africa. Rwanda is the only country in Africa with wild populations of gorillas, chimpanzees, lions, leopards, buffalos, elephants, black rhinos, and white rhinos.

The most popular attraction in Rwanda is tracking mountain gorillas in Volcanoes National Park, where the movie “Gorillas in the Mist” was filmed and where Dian Fossey spent almost two decades studying gorilla behaviour.

In addition to gorillas, Rwanda offers many opportunities to observe other primates. Volcanoes National Park is home to a group of endangered golden monkeys, while Nyungwe National Park has the highest diversity of primates, including chimpanzees and various monkey species. Gishwati-Mukura National Park is also home to chimpanzees, monkeys, and forest birds.

Although it was previously not a typical safari destination, Akagera National Park has now been converted into a Big Five savannah reserve through a recent reintroduction campaign. The large Lake Kivu is situated in the western Rift Valley, and there is a pleasant Congo Nile Trail through the Kivu hinterland.
