What’s the best travel period?

If you’re planning a trip to Rwanda to see the wildlife, keep in mind the best time to go on a safari;

The dry season runs from June to September.

Best for gorilla trekking, as the forest trails are less slick, and the weather is generally more pleasant. It’s also easier to spot animals in Akagera National Park due to the thinner vegetation. Even during the high season, the parks don’t feel overcrowded, and there is more sunshine to enjoy.

However, it’s important to note that gorilla permits need to be booked well in advance. While the scenery is typically more beautiful during the wet season, which runs from October to May, forest trails become slippery and challenging.

Despite the challenging conditions, gorilla trekking departures still leave as scheduled, even in heavy rain. Additionally, the wet season has its perks, such as green landscapes and clear skies. There may also be possible low-season discounts available.

Rwanda was unlikely to become a popular destination for wildlife watching, but now it is considered one of the most attractive locations in Africa. Rwanda is the only country in Africa with wild populations of gorillas, chimpanzees, lions, leopards, buffalos, elephants, black rhinos, and white rhinos.

The most popular attraction in Rwanda is tracking mountain gorillas in Volcanoes National Park, where the movie “Gorillas in the Mist” was filmed and where Dian Fossey spent almost two decades studying gorilla behaviour.

In addition to gorillas, Rwanda offers many opportunities to observe other primates. Volcanoes National Park is home to a group of endangered golden monkeys, while Nyungwe National Park has the highest diversity of primates, including chimpanzees and various monkey species. Gishwati-Mukura National Park is also home to chimpanzees, monkeys, and forest birds.

Although it was previously not a typical safari destination, Akagera National Park has now been converted into a Big Five savannah reserve through a recent reintroduction campaign. The large Lake Kivu is situated in the western Rift Valley, and there is a pleasant Congo Nile Trail through the Kivu hinterland.
