The canopy walk activity in Rwanda’s Nyungwe Forest National Park is a thrilling adventure that nature lovers and adrenaline junkies should not miss out on if they visit Rwanda and Nyungwe Forest for any tour, whether it’s birding, chimp trekking, or any of the park’s other nature activities. The canopy walk is now an iconic Nyungwe Forest National Park activity that is not to be missed on Nyungwe tour itineraries. The hike provides stunning views of East Africa’s largest and oldest Afro-montane forest and the opportunity to witness wildlife such as monkeys and birds that dwell in the forest canopies but are difficult to see from the ground.
The Igishigishigi trail, one of the many hiking trails in Nyungwe Forest National Park, leads to the canopy walkway. Thus, the canopy walk tour entails hiking over the 2.1-kilometre-long Igishigishigi route, with the canopy walkway serving as a type of bridge or shortcut along this looped trail. The canopy walkway is 160 meters long and hangs 74 meters above the ground across a steep valley densely forested with trees.
The canopy walk tour begins at Uwinka, which also serves as the park’s headquarters, and the round trip takes between 1.5 and 2 hours. Visitors embark on a woodland trail that connects to the Igishigishigi trail after registering at the Visitor’s Center. The forest walk provides a lovely natural experience in which one may watch ground-level wildlife and enjoy stunning vistas of forest-clad undulating hills. The canopy walk tour is a guided activity led by a park ranger. Tours without a guide are not permitted.
The canopy walk requires a minimum age of 6 years, and an adult must accompany youngsters.

Nyungwe Forest National Park through guided nature walks is an exhilarating experience that allows travelers to meander through the forest and discover diverse species, including primates, insects, birds, plants, and many others. Like all activities within the park, these walks are subject to varying entrance fees. The fees for the different guided nature walks available in the park are as follows:
- Foreign non-residents pay: $40 per person
- Foreign residents pay: $30 per person
- Rwandan residents pay: between Rwf 3,000
- East African Community (EAC) nationals pay: $5 per person
- East African Community (EAC) foreign residents pay: $30 per person
- Rwandan students pay: Rwf 1,500 per person
- East African Community (EAC) students pay: $3 per person
- Foreign residents and students pay: $20 per person
