Day 1: Transfer to Mount Rwenzori National Park.

Experience the convenience of a knowledgeable driver tour guide who will warmly greet you and provide transportation from either Kampala or Entebbe International Airport. Our journey begins with a scenic route to Kasese via Mbarara, with an exciting stop at the equator line, approximately 80km from Kampala. Take a break in Mbarara for a delightful lunch before continuing our adventure. By late afternoon, we’ll arrive at Nyakalengija. There, we’ll visit the Rwenzori Mountaineering Services headquarters for registration, ensuring a smooth process. Finally, retire to your comfortable hotel for a delicious dinner and an enjoyable overnight stay.

Day 2: Nyakalengija (1,646m) – Nyabitaba Hut (2,652m).

Embark on an exciting first day of your Mount Rwenzori hike as we begin by heading to the Rwenzori Mountaineering Services headquarters in Ibanda. There, we’ll handle all necessary payments and have the pleasure of meeting our experienced Rwenzori trekkers/hiker guides and reliable porters. Once preparations are complete, we’ll set off on a warm-up trek to Mount Rwenzori National Park’s main gate for park registration, signalling the official start of our adventure. The trail will lead us through the captivating Bakonjo settlements and lush plantations, immersing us in the local surroundings. Our central circuit trail hike commences from the main gate, right after registration, and takes us to the scenic Nyabitabba hut at an elevation of 2652m. Anticipate a rewarding journey of approximately 6-7 hours, filled with awe-inspiring landscapes and memorable experiences.

Day 3: Nyabitaba – John Matte (3505m).

Before beginning an exciting walk, start your day with a full meal for breakfast at the Nyabitaba Lodge. Continue on the John Matte trail as you pass through the breathtaking Kurt Scheffer pass, which is tucked between the Bujuku and Mubuku Rivers. You can anticipate navigating through difficult terrain, such as moss-covered rocks that are slippery, and steep inclines as you continue your trek. The road meanders through an alluring fusion of montane woods and bamboo, providing a habitat for a variety of bird species that can surprise you with their presence. The Nyamileju rock shelter, where a well-earned lunch break is waiting, may be reached by continuing your climb. Day 4: John Matte Hut – Bujuku Hut (3962m).

Prepare for another exciting day of exploration by filling yourself with an energizing breakfast. Cross the Bujuku River first, then enter the fascinating Bigo Bog region. As you approach Lake Bujuku, continue down the inclining route until you reach the upper Bigo bog. From there, you can go into the drier ground. Take a minute to enjoy the stunning panoramic views of Mount Stanley to the west, Mount Baker to the south, and Speke to the north, which provide an impressive background for your journey. You will reach the Bujuku camp, which is located at an amazing altitude of 3962m, after a satisfying 4-5 hour trek. Enjoy a sumptuous dinner in the evening before getting a rundown of the day’s events and spending the night in comfort. Day 5: Bujuku camp – Elena Hut (4541m).

Get ready for a challenging yet rewarding day as you embark on a 6-7 hour trek from Bujuku hut to Elena hut. This leg of the journey takes you through the cold and rocky terrain of Mount Stanley. Starting from Bujuku, you’ll traverse the upper Bigo bog, navigating steep slopes along the shores of Lake Bujuku as you ascend to the magnificent 4372m Scott-Elliot pass. Along the way, you’ll encounter various swamps and be captivated by the beauty of the ground gully. Negotiating the steep sections above the gully, you’ll use a sturdy metal ladder to reach a junction where two trails diverge. Taking the right trail, you’ll continue your ascent towards Elena Hut, following a challenging path that ascends steeply above large boulders towards Mount Stanley. Alternatively, the left trail leads to the Scott-Elliot pass, descending towards Kitandara hut. Arriving at Elena hut in the afternoon, you’ll be rewarded with breathtaking views of Mount Baker and Mount Speke, although sometimes obscured by fog. Savour a hearty dinner and spend a comfortable overnight stay at the hut, surrounded by the awe-inspiring beauty of the mountains.

Day 6: Summit Margherita Peak (5,109m) – Kitandara Hut (4,023m).

Prepare for an early start as you wake up at 2:00 am, enjoy a nourishing breakfast, and embark on your exhilarating hike to the summit of Margherita Peak, commencing at 3:00 am. The journey takes you across the Stanley plateau, gradually ascending towards the pinnacle of Mount Stanley. With the guidance of your experienced mountaineering team, you’ll navigate steep and rocky sections using ropes, as well as utilize crampons and an ice ax on the glacial ax. This demanding phase may last several hours until you reach the base of Margherita Glacier, known as the most challenging part of the 9-day Mount Rwenzori central circuit trek. From there, push onward and upward to reach the magnificent peak of Mount Stanley, known as Margherita Peak, soaring at an impressive altitude of 5107m. After relishing this remarkable experience, descend to Elena hut for a well-deserved lunch. It’s worth noting that depending on the strength and preferences of your group, you may choose to spend an additional night at Elena Hut and proceed to Kitandara and Guy Yeoman the following day.

Day 7: Kitandara – Guy Yeoman (3505m).

Begin your day with an early morning breakfast before embarking on a full-day trek that will span approximately 6-8 hours. The trail takes you along the base of Mount Baker, which can be quite slippery, adding an extra element of adventure to your journey. As you make your way forward, you’ll face a steep ascent up the headwall that extends from the base of Mount Baker, leading you towards the southern side of the majestic Rwenzori Mountains. Continuing on, you’ll traverse a long stretch of muddy trail, passing through notable landmarks such as Kabamba, Akhendahi, and the rock shelters of Bujongolo, which hold historical significance as the base camp for the Duke of Abruzzi’s expeditions in 1906. Continuing along the Kabamba trail, you’ll eventually reach Guy Yeoman, a welcoming hut located near the banks of the picturesque River Mubuku. Here, you’ll enjoy a satisfying dinner and spend a comfortable overnight stay, surrounded by the natural beauty of the area.

Day 8: Descend from Guy Yeoman to Nyabitaba to Nyakalengijja.

On the final day of your remarkable 9-day trek through the central circuit trail of the Rwenzori Mountains, start your day with an early breakfast and begin your descent towards Nyabitaba hut. As you make your way through the enchanting Bamboo forest, you’ll be treated to captivating sights of vibrant flowers, diverse plant life, and the flowing Kinchuchu and Mubuku Rivers. Don’t miss the opportunity to admire the picturesque Kabamba Falls along the way.
